Four Styles of Cast Stone Fireplace Mantels

August 7th, 2012 by Emily

In April, we discussed three advantages of a cast stone fireplace mantel.  It is simple to install, is available in a variety of colors and stone finishes, and comes in styles to complement any decor.  Today, we’re going to share the four style series in our cast stone fireplace mantels collection.  Each series in the cast stone mantels collection carries a unique style and personality and has numerous options to make it your own.

Majestic Series The Majestic Series of custom-size cast stone fireplace surrounds is our most elegant collection of timeless European stone mantel designs. The scale and detail of this mantel series is exceptional. The beautiful custom facing, along with optional hearths and overmantels, will enhance the fireplace mantel and create a unique focal point for your home.

Classic Series The Classic Series cast stone fireplace surrounds are hand-crafted stone mantels inspired by European designs. Each stone mantel has variations in color and finish that capture the true essence of natural stone. Optional matching surround facing, hearths and overmantels  are available for this collection and are sized to fit your specific situation.  The Claire stone mantel is the most popular item in this series; it is created using a strong composite stone mantel material and is a beautiful accent to a living room or den.

Standard Series Kits These cast stone mantels are available for immediate shipment in a Limestone color. Each stone mantel comes complete with hearth and adjustable facing panels that allow for both small and large firebox openings. The Standard Series Stone Mantel Kits are great choices for a contemporary decor style.

From the Standard Series, this Craig Mantel is shown in the Natural Stone Finish.

Builders Series Kits Our Builder Series Kits are an economical way to have a terrific-looking stone mantel. These simple American cast stone fireplace mantels can be installed quickly with little effort.  The Builders Series Kits include adjustable legs, header facing panel and hearth.

Fireplace Mantles Add a Center Point to Any Home

February 3rd, 2012 by Emily

Fireplace mantles represent the center point of almost every home. Fireplace mantles are considered by many to be a place of gathering, a central spot in the home for a family to gather around the warmth of a fire. They represent in many ways, a time before families gathered around televisions or even radios, a time when conversation drove family relationships. It is hard not to picture family when one thinks of a mantle. We think of stockings hanging above a fire on Christmas Eve or a group of friends chatting about the passing days as they sit in their formal living room. A spot to sit around with the people who are important to us and talk without the distractions of the technological world.

For many people who wish to upgrade their existing fireplace the task of putting in a fireplace mantle seems daunting, but the process can actually be quite simple. When trying to decide what type of mantle one wishes to put into their home the sheer variety of fireplace mantles can be intimidating. What type of material are you interested in, stone, marble or a wood mantel? What style best suits your home? Are you looking for a more contemporary style or a more traditional look? All of these questions can seem daunting, however, a mantle can provide a central focal point for a home that is unique and unlike any other piece of furniture. Fireplace mantles represent a place to gather, which is one of the most important aspects of a home. Above all things, most people want their home to be welcoming and inviting, fireplace mantles are an important component for creating that environment.

There is a common perception that fireplace mantles have to be professionally installed and that installations must involve many hours of hard labor. The fact of the matter is, most fireplace mantles can be installed very easily by ordinary individuals in a single afternoon. Whether you are looking to install cast stone, marble or traditional wood, a fireplace mantle can be installed by following the few simple steps found here.  Not to be forgotten, one of the most crucial aspects of fireplace mantles are the fireplace facing kits. These marble, granite, limestone or travertine accents provide the perfect compliment to any traditional wood mantle.

Are you looking to complete a Fireplace Remodel?

January 30th, 2012 by Emily

Often remodeling aspects of your home can seem like a daunting task. Whether you are simply interested in adding a bit of shelf space to your living room, or you are looking for a full stone surround as part of a larger remodeling project, the prospect of a fireplace remodel can be intimidating. Fortunately, the process of installing everything from a wood mantel shelf to a large marble mantel can easily be divided into a series of simple steps. The fact of the matter is, with the right tools and a bit of dedication, almost anyone can successfully complete a mantel installation as part of their fireplace remodel.

Most mantel installations involve only a small set of household tools and a little bit of time and dedication. Traditional wood mantels offer a simple yet substantial way to add sophistication and beauty to any fireplace remodel. Wood mantels such as the Hawthorne and Newport styles can transform a room, adding the traditional look of a wood mantle in only a couple of hours.

Here is an example of a Hawthorne Mantel

Here is a recent review discussing the ease of installing a mantel during a fireplace remodel.

“Just wanted to say that we are COMPLETELY satisfied with our purchase at MantelsDirect. Our shipment arrived on a Thursday and the following Saturday we installed it. The instructions were great, the construction “dead-on”, and the ease of installation a breeze. We were so very thrilled at the finished product, which now looks like it was built at the same time the house was. It totally transformed our somewhat-less-than-desirable fireplace into the focal point of our room. The “return” worked perfectly for our raised hearth and the corresponding lip. Thank you for such a good remedy for our “problem” area! We will share your site with all who view our newly installed mantel.”

With reviews like this the evidence is clear that anyone can transform their room with a fireplace remodel in just a few easy to follow steps.

How To Replace An Existing Fireplace Mantel

October 24th, 2011 by Emily Hulsey

Considering remodeling your home? We recommend replacing an older or outdated fireplace mantel to update the look of an entire living space. Even if you are not an expert craftsman, you can anticipate completing this project within a few hours. Considering that the enjoyment you’ll get from your new mantel will last for years to come, it would be time well-spent.

Here is a list of items you will need in order to complete the job:

  • Pry bar / Crowbar
  • Tape Measure
  • Level
  • Saw
  • Drill with Masonry bit
  • Lag Sleeves and bolts
  • Hammer / Nails
  • Ledger board (2 x 2 inches)

Step 1: Out With The Old!

Using your crowbar or a pry bar, carefully remove the mantel from the bricks or wall it is fastened to. In most cases, fireplace mantels are usually locked together with glue and wooden pegs. Progress little by little to avoid cracking or damaging the bricks or wall to which the mantel is attached.

Step 2: Measure

The next step is to measure the width and the depth of the old mantel with your tape measure. These measurements will be used to determine the measurements of your new mantel. So remember, measure carefully! If you are planning on installing a surround mantel or wrap-around mantel, make sure to adjust your measurements accordingly.

Step 3: Install the Support Ledger

Now you will need to measure the width of the fireplace opening, and cut a 2 x 2-inch piece of ledger board to match. Position the support ledger at the desired height and level it. Drill the pilot holes in the support ledger board completely through the other side. You’ll need to put in the lag sleeves into the ledger board and screw in the lag screws with your drill or electric screwdriver.

Step 4: Prepping the New Mantel

After installing the support ledger brace board, place the mantel alongside the stone, brick or wall. Line up the new mantel so that it is in the center of the support wall and the fireplace opening, and to where it rests upon the support ledger board.

Step 5: Installing The Mantel to the Support Ledger Board

After you have properly positioning the mantel with the support ledger board and fireplace opening, secure it by nailing the mantel directly to the ledger board.

Step 6: Locking the Mantel

Remember to always follow the manufacturer’s instruction for installing the mantel to the bricks or wall. Normally, this process includes either glue and pegs or lag bolts and sleeves. Prior to securing the mantel to the support bricks or support wall, check to ensure that the mantel is level. If not, adjust accordingly.

Congratulations! You have now completed the final step of the installation process. Now the only thing left is to clean up, sit back and enjoy your new fireplace mantel.

June 16th, 2011 by Emily Hulsey

Is your fireplace looking a little tired? Or does your builder’s mantel still look as dull as it did when you moved in? You know the fireplace is the perfect focal point in any room. However, if your not happy with your current fireplace, it can be hard to design around it. By updating and re-facing your current mantel, you can give your fireplace and overall room a facelift.

  • Cast stone mantels are lightweight, easy to install, and much more affordable than traditional solid stone mantels. Stone mantels are fire resistant and allow for zero clearance from combustible material (no space required between firebox and mantel) making it the perfect choice for gas and wood fireplaces.
  • Marble mantels are classically designed and will add a touch of elegance to any space. Marble mantels are available in a variety of sizes, designs, and colors.
  • Traditional wood mantels create a statement of style and craftsmanship. MantelsDirect.com offers wood mantels in cherry, maple, and oak. Wood mantels are designed to overlap your facing material and provide a finished transition between wall, facing, and firebox. Wood mantels are easy to install with just a few tools and limited skill, you can quickly install your mantel kit.

Fresh Ideas for a Fireplace Mantel

June 4th, 2010 by Emily

You’ve been ready for summer since January, but what about your home interior? Put those rotting fire logs outside and get creative with your dormant fireplace. Freshen up your fireplace mantel during the warm months. Here a few fresh ideas for a beautiful display in your fireplace mantel.

Birch tree bark’s light shades and texture can bring alot of interest to an otherwise cold dark space. Buy birch at a garden center or on-line and cut it to your specifications. Measure the opening to get a full look without a gap on the sides. Pile one log directly on top of another in the opening, taking time and try them in different orders until you find the best arrangement.

A mirror would not only reflect light but a gorgeous rug facing the fireplace mantel. Visit your local framer to have a piece of mirror cut to the exact dimensions of the fireplace opening. Ask to have the edges of the mirror seamed, so they’re not sharp. Or simply lean a large framed mirror against the front of the hearth, as you might lean a piece of art against the wall above the mantel, if you don’t have pets or small children.

A surprising way to bring a glow to the fireplace is to insert an electric log set, striking when the light reflects against a shiny floor. This is a way to brighten up the fireplace mantel and hearth until the temperatures drop in the fall, so go ahead and snake the cord out of the opening to plug the electric fireplace in.

If it’s the mantel itself that you cannot get over, and the surround is what has caught your eye, I suggest you check out Ramsay from the Majestic Series of Classic Stone Mantels. Summer is a great time to renovate the whole fireplace mantel and surround to ensure the project is completed and ready for year end holidays.

Stage Fireplace Mantels to Sell

May 13th, 2010 by Emily

Have you noticed FOR SALE signs popping up all over town? Now that the school year is winding down, this is a great time to get your home listed. First impressions are crucial because studies have shown that most buyers make a decision about a house within 15 seconds of walking in the door! I wanted to share a few more thoughts on home staging in a competitive real estate market.

Fireplace MantelExperienced real estate agents will give staging tips that include cleaning until your home is spotless, next declutter, followed by depersonalizing. You may have taken the photos off the refrigerator, hidden stacks of paper from your desk and freshened up with a new coat of paint.  Look past your furniture, art and fireplace screen, it’s the bones of the house that must have a draw to the buyers.

Homes with strong architectural details add interest and anchor the home in a period or style. These features include crown molding, the stairwell and fireplace mantel. As you walk into a room the eye is drawn to the focal point, most commonly the fireplace mantel. To declutter and freshen up the mantel fireplace is one of the biggest staging tips I could give. A fireplace make-over project could include refacing the fireplace surround and installing a new mantel shelf. Fireplace mantels can be designed to overlap your existing facing material and provide a completely new custom look. Remodeling the fireplace mantel is completely adaptable keeping staging to sell and the home improvement upgrade within your budget. Think of this as an investment in your home. You may find illustrated measuring instructions or an installation guide helpful in deciding fireplace mantels that would best stage your home for buyers.

Enhancing the architectural elements of the fireplace mantel, as  your room’s primary focal point, will add to the overall home value, get it staged to sell and impact your showings. Staging is a short term marketing tool focused on the showing keeping the end goal in mind: SOLD!
